During Sunday evening and into Monday night, the flow will turn north and increasingly colder air of polar origin will reach the northern side of the Alps. Typically, this polar air no longer contains as much moisture, which means that precipitation in the lowlands will decrease on Monday. On the northern slopes of the Alps, however, the air will be damm up and precipitation will continue to fall.

The origin of the air can be shown well using trajectories. The following illustrations show the path that an air parcel takes before it reaches Lucerne at different altitudes on Sunday afternoon and Monday afternoon.
